Automatisiertes Energie- management bei Carl Eichhorn

Carl Eichhorn KG Wellpappenwerke now automatically captures its energy data by using a retrofit network: Energy measurement data is captured via IIoT boxes and transmitted to the digital platform openpack. This gives the company control over its current energy and resource consumption at a glance, identifies potential savings, and can respond more quickly to deviations.

Carl Eichhorn got into conversation with the team behind openpack, the globally active digital platform for the corrugated board industry. They discovered that there was a need for a simple solution for the energy and resource management of the machines. After all, providing evidence for certifications such as ISO 50001 turns out to be time-consuming: In practice, the data gathering and evaluation for this are extremely cumbersome. The corrugated board manufacturer wanted a solution that would make it easier to break down the energy consumption of the machines and identify potential cost savings.

Significance of digitalization “massive” for Carl Eichhorn

The openpack team recommended digital data capturing with the openpack platform. In doing so, openpack was preaching to the choir at the well-known family-owned company. Because Carl Eichhorn estimates the impact of ongoing digitalization on its business as “massive”. Managing Director Martin Keirath says: “In order to be able to offer a mass product like corrugated board efficiently and cost-effectively, all areas of corrugated board production must be more automated than ever before.” He expects to witness trend-setting digital simplifications for the corrugated board industry in the next five years.

Energy monitoring is professionalized by means of post-linking and retrofitting

The task was to capture energy data such as voltage and current curves, active power, and much more in as uncomplicated a way as possible and forward it to openpack. The data converge in the platform. In the long term, the intention is to build up a database that will enable anomalies and deviations to be detected at an early stage. “We were convinced by the open platform and the team,” says Martin Keirath, explaining the reasons why the company chose openpack. “The combination of openpack and the systems connected to it makes for a well-rounded overall package for more speed.”

The suggestion was to first carry out the post-crosslinking of the FFG 8.20 inline machine. Together, a concept was developed for the planned post-crosslinking. openpack asked mCloud Systems to come on board as a reliable partner.

The company specializes in sensor communication and IoT scenarios with robust communication connections and simple integration options. Together, they started working on the project. The keyword was retrofitting– modernizing and updating existing plants and machines.

The IIoT boxes and the current measuring clamps were mounted on the machine within a short time and with little installation effort. The boxes can be mounted flexibly and transmit measured data wirelessly to openpack. The measurement is galvanically isolated, which does not interfere with the machine and avoids the risk of downtime due to the measurement equipment.

Improved efficiency and ease of operation

Data from the FFG 8.20 machine is now automatically transferred to the connected platform. The result: greater efficiency and an accurate overview of energy requirements and costs. It is now possible to see at a glance where potential savings lie dormant – previously unthinkable. Managing Director Martin Keirath is satisfied: “I like the simplicity of the platform, which is easy for any user to handle. And we can quickly access operating instructions, machine data, production information, or machine repair times, for example.” The new solution was also implemented quickly. The way is clear for further joint projects.
